Eddy Current Probe Gap Voltage and Calibration: What to Check

Review eddy current probe gap voltage, target material, cable matching and calibration checks before selecting or replacing a displacement sensor system.

Understand what gap voltage can tell you

A gap voltage is useful only with the calibration curve for the selected probe system and target. There is no single setting that applies to every eddy current displacement probe. Before choosing a gap, identify the measured quantity, output version, target material and complete sensor configuration.

This guide concerns non-contact displacement probes used on machinery. For choosing between a shaft measurement and a bearing-housing measurement, start with shaft vibration versus casing vibration.

Start with what the output measures

The same electrical signal format can describe different measurements. A displacement output can represent the position of a conductive target. A shaft-vibration transmitter can instead convert vibration amplitude into a current signal. Confirm the measured quantity before interpreting a reading as a mechanical gap.

Measurement arrangement Information to confirm
Probe and conditioner with a voltage output Calibrated gap-to-output curve, polarity, valid linear region and receiving-instrument input
Integrated displacement sensor Exact output option, supply, calibrated displacement range and target conditions
Shaft-vibration transmitter with current output Vibration quantity and amplitude convention, configured range, and whether a separate original-signal output is provided

For example, the YD9810 manual describes a shaft-vibration current output and a separate buffered original signal. Its current reading should not be treated as a universal static-gap indicator. See 4–20 mA versus IEPE when comparing signal interfaces; matching the signal name alone does not establish compatibility.

Choose a working gap from the approved curve

A linear range is the span over which a specified response applies. It does not by itself define the starting distance from the probe face to the target. The installation needs enough usable range for the expected movement in the relevant directions.

For radial vibration, a position near the calibrated linear midpoint can provide room for motion toward and away from the probe. An axial-displacement application can have a different movement allowance. Use the configuration's calibration record and the machine's installation requirements to select the starting gap.

Do not copy a gap voltage from another model. The YD9810 manual retains conflicting general gap-voltage examples, and directs the reader to the actual calibration data. An apparently normal reading at one position also does not establish correct sensitivity across the operating range.

Match the target and installation

Eddy current response depends on the conductive target and the sensing arrangement. Report the actual material or alloy, surface condition, available target area, curvature and nearby mounting metal. A material described only as “steel” may not provide enough information to review a calibration.

CEZHEN's YD9800 manual and integrated YDYT9800 manual name different standard calibration materials. Keep these documents and model identities separate. YDYT9800 is not automatically the same sensor as YDYT9810.

Lion Precision's guidance on customer-supplied calibration targets treats target area and curved-target geometry as important calibration conditions. Its dimensions apply to the specified probes and calibration equipment. Use the approved drawing for the selected CEZHEN configuration rather than applying a generic clearance ratio.

Review the complete measurement chain

For a separate probe and conditioner, identify the probe, its integral cable, any extension cable and the conditioner as a configuration. Record complete component codes and the probe-plus-extension length. The conditioner-to-receiver output cable is a separate connection.

The YD9800 configuration reference explains the cable combinations printed in its catalog. Those combinations do not approve arbitrary cable additions or substitutions. When replacing a component, provide all existing component codes and ask for a configuration review before assuming that a common connector or probe diameter makes the parts interchangeable.

For an integrated sensor such as YDYT9810, identify the exact output and cable option. Do not transfer a rule about a remote probe extension to every other cable in the installation.

Separate verification from adjustment

A static multi-position check examines the relationship between known gap changes and output over the required range. A dynamic check at a fixed gap examines response to motion at selected test conditions. These checks answer different questions; neither a single voltage reading nor one dynamic test establishes every aspect of the system.

Agate's proximity-probe verification guide makes this distinction. Its example equipment and numerical settings are not CEZHEN specifications. Acceptance criteria must come from the selected system, the required measurement and the approved procedure.

Adjustment is a separate decision. Some manufacturer systems support controlled material-specific linearization; eddylab describes this for its TX electronics and reference-probe arrangement. That capability does not establish that another sensor can be adjusted in the same way. Investigate a changed response before altering calibration to make a reading appear normal.

Send the details needed for a configuration review

You can start with the information you have and mark missing details as unknown:

  • Machine and task: shaft position, vibration or another measurement; required movement range and measurement points.
  • Target: material or alloy, surface condition, dimensions and any drawing.
  • Existing system: full probe, extension-cable, conditioner or integrated-sensor codes.
  • Installation: available gap and clearances, cable lengths, mounting arrangement and movement direction.
  • Electrical connection: receiving instrument, required output, supply and measured quantity.
  • Environment: probe and electronics temperatures separately, exposure conditions and any required protection documentation.
  • Review question: new selection, a replacement, an unexpected gap reading or verification of an existing configuration.

Send an eddy current configuration question. You can also review the YD9800 product, YD9810 transmitter and YDYT9810 integrated sensor. Confirm the supplied configuration before using a general example as an installation setting.
